The Lamps

24 ^(A)The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²“Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil from beaten olives for the lamp, that a light may be kept burning regularly. ³Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, Aaron shall arrange it from evening to morning before the Lord regularly. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. ⁴He shall arrange the lamps on the ^(B)lampstand of pure gold^[a] before the Lord regularly.

Bread for the Tabernacle

⁵“You shall take fine flour and bake twelve ^(C)loaves from it; two tenths of an ephah^[b] shall be in each loaf. ⁶And you shall set them in two piles, six in a pile, ^(D)on the table of pure gold^[c] before the Lord. ⁷And you shall put pure frankincense on each pile, that it may go with the bread as a memorial portion as a food offering to the Lord. ⁸^(E)Every Sabbath day Aaron shall arrange it before the Lord regularly; it is from the people of Israel as a covenant forever. ⁹And ^(F)it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and ^(G)they shall eat it in a holy place, since it is for him a most holy portion out of the Lord's food offerings, a perpetual due.”

Hoshea Reigns in Israel

17 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, ^(A)Hoshea the son of Elah began to reign in Samaria over Israel, and he reigned nine years. ²And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, yet not as the kings of Israel who were before him. ³^(B)Against him came up ^(C)Shalmaneser king of Assyria. And Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute. ⁴But the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and offered no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year. Therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison. ⁵Then the king of Assyria invaded all the land and came to Samaria, and for three years he besieged it.

The Fall of Israel

⁶In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria ^(D)captured Samaria, ^(E)and he carried the Israelites away to Assyria ^(F)and placed them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of ^(G)Gozan, and in the cities of ^(H)the Medes.

Exile Because of Idolatry

⁷And this occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the Lord their God, ^(I)who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods ⁸^(J)and walked in the customs of the nations whom the Lord drove out before the people of Israel, ^(K)and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced. ⁹And the people of Israel did secretly against the Lord their God things that were not right. They built for themselves high places in all their towns, ^(L)from watchtower to fortified city. ¹⁰They set up for themselves ^(M)pillars and Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree, ¹¹and there they made offerings on all the high places, as the nations did whom the Lord carried away before them. And they did wicked things, provoking the Lord to anger, ¹²and they served idols, ^(N)of which the Lord had said to them, “You shall not do this.” ¹³Yet the Lord ^(O)warned Israel and Judah ^(P)by every prophet ^(Q)and every seer, saying, ^(R)“Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants the prophets.”

¹⁴But they would not listen, ^(S)but were stubborn, as their fathers had been, who did not believe in the Lord their God. ¹⁵They despised his statutes ^(T)and his covenant that he made with their fathers and the warnings that he gave them. They went after ^(U)false idols ^(V)and became false, and they followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom the ^(W)Lord had commanded them that they should not do like them. ¹⁶And they abandoned all the commandments of the Lord their God, and made for themselves metal images of ^(X)two calves; and they ^(Y)made an Asherah and ^(Z)worshiped all the host of heaven and served ^(AA)Baal. ¹⁷^(AB)And they burned their sons and their daughters as offerings^[a] and used ^(AC)divination and ^(AD)omens and ^(AE)sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger. ¹⁸Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but ^(AF)the tribe of Judah only.

¹⁹^(AG)Judah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced. ²⁰And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them ^(AH)and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

²¹^(AI)When he had torn Israel from the house of David, ^(AJ)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. And Jeroboam drove Israel from following the Lord ^(AK)and made them commit great sin. ²²The people of Israel walked in all the sins that Jeroboam did. They did not depart from them, ²³until the Lord removed Israel out of his sight, ^(AL)as he had spoken by all his servants the prophets. ^(AM)So Israel was exiled from their own land to Assyria until this day.

A Lament for the Princes of Israel

19 And you, ^(A)take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, ²and say:

What was your mother? ^(B)A lioness!
    Among lions she crouched;
in the midst of young lions
    she reared her cubs.
³And she brought up one of her cubs;
    ^(C)he became a young lion,
^(D)and he learned to catch prey;
    he devoured men.
⁴The nations heard about him;
    ^(E)he was caught in their pit,
^(F)and they brought him with hooks
    to the land of Egypt.
⁵When she saw that she waited in vain,
    that her hope was lost,
^(G)she took another of her cubs
    and made him a young lion.
⁶He prowled among the lions;
    he became a young lion,
and he learned to catch prey;
    he devoured men,
⁷and seized^[a] their widows.
    He laid waste their cities,
and the land was appalled and all who were in it
    at the sound of his roaring.
⁸^(H)Then the nations set against him
    from provinces on every side;
^(I)they spread their net over him;
    ^(J)he was taken in their pit.
⁹With hooks ^(K)they put him in a cage^[b]
    and ^(L)brought him to the king of Babylon;
    they brought him into custody,
that his voice should no more be heard
    on ^(M)the mountains of Israel.

¹⁰Your mother was ^(N)like a vine in a vineyard^[c]
    planted by the water,
^(O)fruitful and full of branches
    ^(P)by reason of abundant water.
¹¹Its strong stems became
    rulers' scepters;
it towered aloft
    among the thick boughs;^[d]
it was seen in its height
    with the mass of its branches.
¹²But the vine was plucked up in fury,
    cast down to the ground;
^(Q)the east wind dried up its fruit;
    they were stripped off and withered.
As for its strong stem,
    fire consumed it.
¹³^(R)Now it is planted in the wilderness,
    in a dry and thirsty land.
¹⁴^(S)And fire has gone out from the stem of its shoots,
    has consumed its fruit,
^(T)so that there remains in it no strong stem,
    no scepter for ruling.

This is ^(U)a lamentation and has become a lamentation.

²Who can utter the mighty deeds of the Lord,
    or declare all his praise?
³Blessed are they who observe justice,
    who ^(E)do righteousness at all times!

⁴^(F)Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people;
    help me when you save them,^[a]
⁵that I may look upon the prosperity of your ^(G)chosen ones,
    that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
    that I may glory with your inheritance.

⁶^(H)Both we and ^(I)our fathers have sinned;
    we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.
⁷Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,
    did not consider your wondrous works;
they ^(J)did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
    but ^(K)rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
⁸Yet he saved them ^(L)for his name's sake,

Woe to Unrepentant Cities

¹³^(A)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in ^(B)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. ¹⁴^(C)But it will be more bearable in the judgment for ^(D)Tyre and Sidon than for you. ¹⁵And you, Capernaum, ^(E)will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to ^(F)Hades.

¹⁶^(G)“The one who hears you hears me, and ^(H)the one who rejects you rejects me, and ^(I)the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

The Return of the Seventy-Two

¹⁷^(J)The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, ^(K)even the demons are subject to us in your name!” ¹⁸And he said to them, ^(L)“I saw Satan ^(M)fall like lightning from heaven. ¹⁹Behold, I have given you authority ^(N)to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of ^(O)the enemy, and ^(P)nothing shall hurt you. ²⁰^(Q)Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that ^(R)your names are written in heaven.”

The Collection for Christians in Jerusalem

9 Now ^(A)it is superfluous for me to write to you about ^(B)the ministry for the saints, ²for I know your readiness, ^(C)of which I boast about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready ^(D)since last year. And your zeal has stirred up most of them. ³But ^(E)I am sending^[a] the brothers so that our boasting about you may not prove empty in this matter, so that you may be ready, ^(F)as I said you would be. ⁴Otherwise, if some Macedonians ^(G)come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. ⁵So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the ^(H)gift^[b] you have promised, so that it may be ready ^(I)as a willing gift, ^(J)not as an exaction.^[c]

The Cheerful Giver

⁶The point is this: ^(K)whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully^[d] will also reap bountifully. ⁷Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, ^(L)not reluctantly or under compulsion, for ^(M)God loves a cheerful giver. ⁸And ^(N)God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency^[e] in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. ⁹As it is written,

^(O)“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor;
his righteousness endures forever.”

¹⁰He who supplies ^(P)seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and ^(Q)increase the harvest of your righteousness. ¹¹^(R)You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which ^(S)through us will produce thanksgiving to God. ¹²For the ministry of this service is not only supplying ^(T)the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. ¹³By their approval of this service, ^(U)they^[f] will glorify God because of your submission that comes from your ^(V)confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, ¹⁴while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. ¹⁵^(W)Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift!
